Walk into any grocery store and pick up a bottle of anything. Turn it around. There it is โ the label. Calories, sugars, sodium, serving size, in a format so standardized you could read it with your eyes closed. That label exists because we decided, decades ago, that people have a right to know what they're putting in their bodies. Now walk next door, order a large blended something-or-other with extra syrup and sweet foam, and ask to see the label for the drink in your hand. There isn't one. There has never been one.
I. The quiet epidemic
Nobody's health falls apart in a day. It creeps โ a few dozen grams of sugar at a time, dissolved and invisible, swallowed through a straw. Liquid calories are uniquely dangerous precisely because they don't feel like eating: they bypass fullness, they ride along with a commute or a study session, and they repeat daily, on autopilot, for years. Rates of type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, and tooth decay have climbed alongside our national drink habit โ and added sugar in beverages remains the single largest source of added sugar in the modern diet.
The daily value for added sugar is 50 grams โ about 12 cubes. A single large blended drink at full sweetness can clear that number before lunch, and nothing in the transaction will ever tell you so. Not the cup. Not the receipt. Not the menu board, which describes a drink you didn't actually order.

II. The engineered menu
This didn't happen by accident. Beverage companies โ global chains and hip newcomers alike โ have discovered that drinks are the most profitable, most photogenic, most habit-forming products they sell. So the menu never sits still. Every season brings a new wave: layered, blended, shaken, topped, color-engineered for the camera, each one sweeter and more elaborate than the last. Limited editions appear and vanish before any nutrition database catches up. The drink is designed in a lab, marketed like fashion, and consumed like water.
We are not against delicious drinks. We are against secret ones. When a product is engineered for maximum craving and released faster than anyone can account for it, disclosure is not a courtesy โ it is the bare minimum.
III. The modification loophole
Here is the loophole the current rules can't reach. Menu-labeling law โ where it applies at all โ covers chains with twenty or more locations, and it covers the standard recipe. But nobody orders the standard recipe anymore. Ordering apps proudly advertise tens of thousands of possible combinations. Extra pumps. Sweet cold foam. A different milk. Sweetness at 120%. A flavor swirl. Each tap quietly rewrites the nutrition of the drink โ and the posted calorie count, the only number you were ever shown, stops being true the moment you touch the order screen.
The customized drink is a nutritional ghost. It exists โ you're holding it โ but on paper, it was never made. Meanwhile the independent cafรฉ, the boba shop, the smoothie counter, the juice bar: they were never asked to disclose anything at all.
A drink that can be customized in ten thousand ways deserves a label that can be, too. The fix isn't a bigger menu board. It's a smarter label.
IV. What we believe
- If you sell it, you can say what's in it.Every made-to-order beverage has a knowable recipe. "It varies" is a spreadsheet problem, not an excuse.
- The label belongs on the cup, not on a website.Nutrition information you have to go hunting for after the purchase is not disclosure. It's a scavenger hunt.
- The label must describe the drink you actually ordered.Base-recipe numbers are fiction the moment a modification is made. Facts must be computed at order time โ dynamically.
- Sugar and caffeine come first.For beverages, these are the two numbers that change lives. Added sugars with % daily value and caffeine belong on every cup, every time.
- Small shops get tools, not fines.Transparency should cost an independent cafรฉ a printer and a subscription โ not a food-lab retainer. The software must do the heavy lifting, free or nearly free.
- Disclosure is not judgment.Order the 69-gram drink. Enjoy every sip. Just order it knowing โ the same way you'd know if it came in a bottle.
- The cup itself shouldn't be a throwaway.A label worth printing deserves a cup worth returning. Deposit-and-return belongs on the same strip of ink.
V. The standard: Dynamic Beverage Nutrition Facts
We are building and openly publishing a standard we call Dynamic Beverage Nutrition Facts (DBNF) โ a nutrition label computed for the exact drink in your hand, at the moment it's made, in the familiar format everyone already knows how to read. The full technical specification โ label geometry, the calculation engine, rounding, the data model, APIs, and cup identity โ is published in seven parts as DBNF-1.
A DBNF label shows
Printed on the cup, on a sticker, or reachable by a QR code on the receipt โ at or before the moment of sale.
- Exact-drink facts โ calories, total and added sugars with % daily value, total fat, sodium, protein, computed from the actual size, milk, syrup pumps, sweetness level, and toppings ordered.
- Caffeine, always โ voluntary under current rules, mandatory under ours, with context against the 400mg/day guidance.
- FDA-familiar formatting โ the same hierarchy, rules, and rounding people have trusted on packaged goods since 1994. No new literacy required.
- Machine-readable data โ every label backed by open, structured data, so health apps, researchers, and dietitians can finally see what made-to-order America actually drinks.
- Optional cup identity โ a deposit amount and cup ID on the same label, so the reusable-cup return economy and the transparency economy share one piece of ink.
VI. The bill
Voluntary goodwill got packaged food nowhere for half a century; the Nutrition Facts panel exists because a law demanded it. We believe made-to-order beverages are due for the same moment. So alongside the software, we are drafting model legislation โ and working to get it introduced and passed into law.
The Beverage Nutrition Transparency Act
- Exact-drink disclosure at point of sale. Any food-service business selling customizable beverages must make calories, total sugars, added sugars (with % daily value), and caffeine for the as-ordered drink available at or before purchase โ on the cup, receipt, order screen, or a scannable code.
- Dynamic computation. Disclosed values must reflect the actual modifications ordered โ size, sweetness level, added syrups, milk substitutions, and toppings โ not a base recipe.
- Phased and proportionate. Large chains comply first; independent shops follow after a grace period, with certified low-cost software tools deemed automatically compliant.
- Safe harbor for good faith. Values computed from a maintained recipe database using standard methods are protected from liability for reasonable variance. Transparency should never be riskier than silence.
- Open data. Standardized, machine-readable beverage nutrition data, so public-health research doesn't depend on scraping marketing websites.

VII. The path: adoption before mandate
We are not waiting for a floor vote. The strategy is the one that has always worked: make the right thing the easy thing, then make it the expected thing, then make it the law.
